Overall goals

Partnership between RCOG, Society of Obstetrics & Gynaecology of Nigeria (SOGON) and African Centre of Excellence for Population Health Policy (ACEPHAP), funded by the Department for Health and Social Care (DHSC formerly THET, UK).

Delivering Essential Gynaecological Skills (EGS) training to multidisciplinary healthcare providers from health facilities in Kano and Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Abuja so that they can better identify, treat and manage gynaecological conditions at the earliest stage, with a woman’s best interest at the centre of care.

The GHM programme is improving women’s health by increasing access to high quality gynaecological services, through advocacy and training
•A one-year partnership programme, overseen by Government of Nigeria
•Delivering Essential Gynaecological Skills training to multi-disciplinary healthcare providers, including frontline staff
•Developing a team of local Expert Trainers
•Establishing champions in hospitals to advocate for prioritisation of gynaecological care

Funding source

It is funded by the UK Department for Health and Social Care (DHSC) previously
known as THET, as part of the Global Health Workforce programme, this fund is
managed by Global Health Partnerships and Ducit Blue Solutions in Nigeria.

Changes

GHM Nigeria Achievements
•Trained 20 Expert Trainers to expertly deliver the EGS training to frontline healthcare workers
•Cascaded training to 180 frontline healthcare workers across Kano and Abuja
•Supported 34 Gender Equality and Social Inclusion Champions to advocate for prioritisation of gynaecology services within their respective facilities
•Secured endorsement of the EGS training package by the Nigerian Federal Ministry of Health
•Generated evidence of impact to secure a commitment from the Government of Nigeria to include roll-out of EGS training within its national funding plans
•Demonstrated that GHM is a delivery model that can be replicated in other low-and-middle-income (LMIC) settings
